PRESS RELEASE
OY-TRR, Oscar Yankey Tango Romeo Romeo
An exhibition with works by the aerial photographer and artist Jan Kofod Winther
January 11. to March 2. 2008
A look at the world from above
To look at the earth from above is a tradition which goes far back in time. It was the French photographer Felix Nadar who in 1858 captured the first images of the earth from 400 meter above ground. To view the earth from above has since become part of globalized cultural events – from the everyday weather forecast to Google Earth on the internet where, with a simple click of the mouse, it is possible to navigate among satellite pictures around the world and to zoom in and out, whenever we want to have a closer look at a particular area.
About the exhibition
Jan Kofod Winther’s exhibition, OY-TRR, Oscar Yankey Tango Romeo Romeo, has its name after the call sign of his small single-engine Sessna 172 airplane. It is about the reality we experience when we cast a look down from several hundred meters above ground. Alone in his airplane with his camera Jan Kofod Winther will capture landscapes and urban structures and then “convert” them into abstract and wonderful shapes revealing their hidden beauty.
At the exhibition we view natural disasters, poetically lit rooftops in Toscana, rich cultural landscapes and imaginative shadows. We see how seemingly chaotic reality can look almost poetic and simple from an airplane. As an example, in 1999 there was a severe storm in Denmark resulting in a lot of damage all over the country. However, from the air, the disaster area looked systematic and structured.
With his camera Winther is able to capture our hidden globe in surprising and magical moments placing us somewhere between drama, beauty, poetry, fact and humour.
The exhibition is supported by Roskilde municipality, Roskilde Bank and the Art Counsel
