THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
ROYAL COLLAGE – Artist from the royal college of art
June 15 th – September 9 th 2001
During the summer 2000 a group from the museum’s research network went on an inspiration tour to London. We saw the newly opened Tate Modern and several other small and large exhibitions. Many of these showed art and ideas of very high quality and had big exhibition potentials. However, the works at the Degree show 2000 at the Royal College of Art made a deep impression. Especially 11 artists stood out and as soon as we got back to Denmark they became the starting point for the exhibition Royal Collage.
The title Royal Collage links the concept of the exhibition with a common network of ideas. The artists at this exhibition form a collage on several levels. They represent five different departments: Glass & Ceramics - Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery - Painting - Printmaking - Photography. Furthermore the artists form a composition of various nationalities, which in addition to the United Kingdom, consists of representatives from Japan, Denmark and Italy.
The idea of a collage is especially expressed in the artists’ interest for crossing disciplines and using various media. For instance, an artist from Glass & Ceramics uses photography, an artist from Printmaking works with sculptural objects and an artist from Photography makes sound works.
Their expressions enter new connections and – collages. This is apparent in the statements written by the artists for this catalogue. In the statements certain words are repeated. Words like: Time, body, confusion, nostalgia, stories, memories and space. Metaphors like: Time is insufficient, stories are recognition and space is reality expanding. These words and metaphors add to the linking of the diverse works of art and are working as an inter-textual guide. Hereby they support the idea that dissimilarity is connected within the structure of the collage.
The artists:
Georgia Boyd Russell (UK), Janice Fisher (UK), Daniela Gullotta (Italy),
Paul Harper (UK), Fergus Heron (UK), Chiho Hitomi (Japan),
Susannah Keay (UK), Anders Kjaergaard (Denmark), Eileen Perrier (UK),
