Illuminated signs light up Roskilde with questions about the city’s myths and history
In January, the museum’s solo exhibition with the artist collective Apparatus 22 opened with the performance piece Positive Tensions – a sensory experience where confetti and thought-provoking questions descended on the audience. Now, the performance lives on in a new form as the work series Beyond the Map, which unfolds as large light installations in public spaces around Roskilde city.
The work series Beyond the Map is a series of circular light signs that use humor and criticism to create curiosity about the city’s hidden potentials, heartbeats and mysteries. Showing around Roskilde city, the signs are the common thread running through the third and final act of the exhibition, Civis Bloomcraft.
Installed around public spaces of Roskilde, the questions weave their way into everyday life, challenging our imagination and perception of reality. At the community center Byens Hus, a work asks “What if kindness governed the city?”, raising a question that at first glance may seem simple, but which, on reflection, opens up new ways of imagining the city and its communities. Another work at Roskilde Library invites us to search for the story of Roskilde’s myths, and at Sct. Hans Have, Apparatus 22 explores the connection between community imagination and health. It is precisely in these different and exploratory spaces that Apparatus 22 wants us to rethink citizenship, city life and the ways we live together.
What does CIVIS BLOOMCRAFT feel like in its unfolding?
“Like an intoxicating fantasy ~ a sensuous reality ~ a caring composition of works born from utopian hearts. As an adventurous ~ alluring ~ fearless joint attempt by us and the museum to reach out into the city, connect with communities that may not care if this is art or something else, listen to the whispers of Roskilde, open conversations and challenge perspectives on future, hope, democracy, generosity, empathy, love, happiness. This could be quite musical, mind-bending, bold, dreamy, fluid, subtle, queer, circuitous, strange and imperfect – glowing in the dark.
Hopefully touching. And uplifting.”

On show until the end of 2025.
The works are all different and we recommend exploring them all. The experience can be stretched over several days and you decide the order yourself.
