Workshop

Embroidery workshop with Cecilia De Jong

Create an amulet with threads that protect or transform.

In connection with the exhibition based on Karoline Ebbesen, we invite you to a special embroidery workshop, where artist Cecilia de Jong explores the connections between two artistic practices that both work with the magical potential of embroidery.

In the workshop, you will learn to embroider your own personal amulet using simple flat stitches. We will use materials collected by the museum or that you bring from home.

We will start with motifs that build bridges between Cecilia’s and Karoline’s worlds of motifs. Each participant will be given a motif and will find the colors and threads that can support their personal hopes and dreams. Where Karoline Ebbesen creates motifs that appear to have protective properties, Cecilia de Jong works with cosmic and stylized nature motifs that seek to enchant (and create direction for) the future. Both artists share a deep respect for the materials and work with what they are given or find. They both work with threads full of stories that embrace being part of an eternal cycle.

You will receive an embroidery kit to take home so that you can finish your amulet at your own pace. Through conversation and collaborative creation, we will explore how embroidery can be both a protective ritual and a transformative practice.

Practical Information
The workshop lasts two hours and requires no special knowledge of embroidery. Get your ticket via the link at the bottom of the page.

Kaååråålines Verses
The exhibition Kaååråålines Vers (Kaååråålines Verses) is the Roskilde Museum of Contemporary Art’s autumn exhibition, displayed in Kurhuset, located in the former Sankt Hans Hospital, where the artist Karoline Ebbesen lived from the mid-1880s until her death in 1936. During her long hospitalization, Ebbesen produced works in textiles, embroidery, collage, drawing, and text, and developed her own font and alphabet. The exhibition presents Ebbesen’s works alongside new large-scale installations by Danish and international artists, all with direct references to Ebbesen.

Cecilia de Jong
Cecilia de Jong (b. 1979) is a Danish contemporary artist who works primarily with embroidery and water-based painting techniques such as gouache and watercolor. De Jong works primarily with recycled textiles and inherited threads—materials with a history that carry stories forward. Her geometric compositions materialize meditative experiences and create portals between worlds where spiritual contemplation meets science fiction-inspired visions of alternative futures. Sustainability and community building are central aspects of her practice, which expands the reach of art through workshops and engagement, such as collecting materials. She also works on developing works or “amulets” for specific individuals through private commissions. She most recently contributed to the exhibition Needle and Thread with the series “Amulets” at Art Museum Brandts (2024), Sorø Art Museum (2025), and Vendsyssel Art Museum (2025).
