Join us as we slow down for a tour focusing on a single work: HUM (2020) by Hajra Waheed at Vaskeriet. In this format, we listen slowly, attentively and using the entire body, exploring the many layers of voices, history and storytelling contained within the work.

Museum visitors spend an average of eight seconds experiencing each artwork in an exhibition. With this special tour format, we want to challenge that pace by slowing down completely and exploring together what emerges: thoughts, sensory impressions, associations, and other personal and collective layers of meaning, when we take our time with a single work.

Hajra Waheed (b. 1980) lives and works in Montréal. HUM (2020) is the first volume in Waheed’s critically acclaimed trilogy of multichannel sound installations. The work is composed of humming and other vocalizations produced with the lips sealed shut. All of the singers and songwriters featured in the work have lived experiences of imprisonment and censorship, and many have been forced into exile for mobilizing a collective voice. Their songs emerge from histories marked by state violence and genocide, as well as mass uprisings in struggles for liberation.

About the exhibition

The Sound of focuses on the poetic, political and social potentials of sound in contemporary art, presenting works by an array of international and Danish artists including Hajra Waheed, Hanne Lippard, Clara Mosconi, Julian Abraham ‘Togar’, Emeka Ogboh, Cally Spooner, Francesco Fonassis, Arendse Krabbe and Annika Kahrs.

Through voices, rhythms, language and vibrations, the exhibition opens experiences that move between the intimate and the collective, between body and space, between listening and action. The exhibition presents several newly produced works together with a programme of performances, talks and activities. Explore the programme here.
