Guided Tour

Special guided tour: Karoline and her time at Sct. Hans Hospital

Join us on a very special tour guided by museum consultant Anne Dorthe Suderbo from Museum Sct. Hans.

Karoline Ebbesen lived most of her life at Sct. Hans Hospital. From her admission in the mid-1880s until her death in 1936. On this special tour, guided by Anne Dorthe Suderbo, we look at how life at the hospital unfolded for Ebbesen and her fellow patients, as well as the treatments of the time and views on employment. We will hear about Karoline Ebbesen’s artistic process and about Museum Sct. Hans’ extensive collection of her art. Anne Dorthe Suderbo will also open Museum Sct. Hans, giving us the opportunity to see works created by other patients, several of whom were admitted at the same time as Ebbesen. The museum has a collection that is closely linked to international collections of art brut and outsider art.

The tour is conducted in Danish.

Anne Dorthe Suderbo
Anne Dorthe Suderbo has a master’s degree and is a museum consultant at the Psychiatric Center Sct. Hans (formerly Sct. Hans Hospital). She has in-depth and long-standing knowledge of the hospital’s history and the psychopathological works in the museum collection, including Karoline Ebbesen’s works, which she has studied, preserved, and communicated at Museum Sct. Hans.

Kaååråålines Verses
The exhibition Kaååråålines Vers (Kaååråålines Verses) is the Roskilde Museum of Contemporary Art’s autumn exhibition, displayed in Kurhuset, located in the former Sankt Hans Hospital, where the artist Karoline Ebbesen lived from the mid-1880s until her death in 1936. During her long hospitalization, Ebbesen produced works in textiles, embroidery, collage, drawing, and text, and developed her own font and alphabet. The exhibition presents Ebbesen’s works alongside new large-scale installations by Danish and international artists, all with direct references to Ebbesen.
