Sound art emerged as a term in the 1990s, but today the term is almost too narrow. Sound rarely appears on its own in contemporary art. Instead, it is woven together with, for example, image and space, helping to unfold and intertwine multiple layers of meaning: often of a more abstract and emotional nature.

Join a special tour with the museum’s director and exhibition curator Christian Skovbjerg Jensen, who takes a deep dive into the exhibition’s concept. Sound has been an important part of the museum’s DNA since its foundation. Today, the museum is nationally recognised for its work with preserving and highlighting ephemeral art forms such as sound, video and performance. During the tour, Christian will focus on selected works and explore the role of sound in contemporary art – an element that is taking up an increasingly prominent space.

Accessibility: Gasværket is a historic building with many stairs. The event is therefore not recommended for visitors with walking difficulties.

About the exhibition

The Sound of focuses on the poetic, political and social potentials of sound in contemporary art, presenting works by an array of international and Danish artists including Hajra Waheed, Hanne Lippard, Clara Mosconi, Julian Abraham ‘Togar’, Emeka Ogboh, Cally Spooner, Francesco Fonassis, Arendse Krabbe and Annika Kahrs.

Through voices, rhythms, language and vibrations, the exhibition opens experiences that move between the intimate and the collective, between body and space, between listening and action. The exhibition presents several newly produced works together with a programme of performances, talks and activities. Explore the programme here.
